Tracking blocker and Tabs implementation – Vivaldi Android Browser snapshot 1847.3

Today’s snapshot adds support for tracking blocker, introduces tabs UI, adds Speed Dial size setting and updates Chromium to 81.

Tracking blocker

Privacy is important to us and our users. This snapshot includes a built-in tracking blocker. We rely on lists of well-known tracker URLs and stop requests to those URLs before they are sent. When it comes to the choice of lists, we are partnering with DuckDuckGo and using the list that they use in their DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials browser extension. This list blocks most of the known trackers out there and should not break websites. It is based on DuckDuckGo Tracker Radar, which continually crawls the web looking for trackers on major web sites.

On Android, the built-in tracking blocker is disabled by default. You can enable it for specific domains through the shield icon in your address field. This means that the first time you go to the site they can track you, but they won’t be able to track you after that. The shield icon also serves to indicate whether blocking is active on the current page or not.
Another way to enable the tracking blocker is to go to “Settings → Ads and Tracking Blocker → Block Trackers on all sites”. Using again the shield icon you can disable the blocking for specific sites.

Take a look and send in your feedback here or in bug reports so that we can continue giving you as many solutions as we can.
This is the very first snapshot and the feature might evolve when it comes to settings, user interface and whether the blocking is enabled or disabled by default.

Tabs UI

As you may have already noticed we integrated tabs UI to Vivaldi mobile for phones. Tabs are one of the most used components of mobile UI and making it available on the phones contributes towards improving usability. If you are not a fan of it and you prefer not to see the tab strip go to “Settings → Show Tab Strip” and disable it.

Even more new Settings

Two more new settings are coming along with this snapshot – “Settings → Hide Status Bar” and “Settings → Small Speed Dials”.

Hide Status Bar setting is disabled by default. And if you need more space, the top status bar on your device can be removed by enabling this setting.

Some of you shared with us your wish of smaller Speed Dial icons and here it is – just enable Small Speed Dials option in the settings.

Take a look at the changelog for a full overview of the changes and let us know what you think.

Differences to Beta/Final

The purpose of these snapshots is to allow our users a chance to preview upcoming changes, and to help us ensure the quality of our latest fixes and improvements, before we add them to a Beta (or Final). If you would prefer something that was already widely tested, stick with the main Vivaldi Android package (currently in Beta).

When testing a Snapshot, it is a good idea to review the changelog (below). Try out the changes and let us know your thoughts in the comments section or directly in the Play Store. When commenting in the Play Store, remember that it is helpful to mention the version you were testing with.

Download options

We are currently offering Snapshots from the Play Store.

Get it on Google Play

Sometimes there might be a delay after a snapshot blog post goes live, while updates are rolled out via the Play Store. If you don’t want to wait, or you do not use the Play Store on your device, we also offer .apk files for manual installation.

Alternative Downloads (1847.3)

Manually installed files can be updated from the Play Store at a later date, provided you installed the one that is most appropriate for your device. If you are not sure which one is right for you, simply install Droid Hardware Info [Alt], switch to the ‘System’ Tab and look at the ‘Instruction Sets’ line.
