Check image Alt text on mobile devices from the image’s context menu.

Alt text provides additional information about the images you find on web pages. On the one hand, it makes the content on the page more accessible, for example, for people who use screen readers, but Alt text is also displayed when, for one reason or another, the images fail to load. Even if you don’t rely on assistive technologies and the content loads without issues, you might still want to take a look at the description of the image.

To view Alt text in Vivaldi on Android and Vivaldi on iOS, long-press on the image to open the context menu, where the Alt text will be displayed as the first thing in the menu.

In Vivaldi on iOS, the whole description is displayed. On Android, if the text is too long, you need to tap on it to display it in its entirety.

Tip #470

Add your Vivaldi account to the Vivaldi Calendar.

Did you know that in addition to the built-in Calendar client, Vivaldi also offers an online calendar service bundled with Vivaldi Webmail*? You can use it with Vivaldi Calendar and add it to other calendar clients and apps that support CalDAV.

To add your Vivaldi account to Vivaldi Calendar:

  1. Go to Settings > Calendar > Calendar Accounts.
  2. Click on + «Add Account».
  3. Select Vivaldi.net.
  4. Give the calendar a name.
  5. Enter your account’s email address.
  6. Enter your account’s login password or the app password, if you have Two-Factor Authentication enabled.
  7. Once logged in, select which calendars you want to sync or hide.
  8. Finish by clicking «Save Account».

Enable vertical Reader View to display texts in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean vertically.

Enabling Reader View helps to read text-heavy pages more easily by removing distractions. To accomodate the readers of vertical text, we’ve also added a setting to display texts in Japanese, Chinese and Korean vertically when Reader View is enabled.

To enable vertical Reader View:

  1. Go to Settings > Web Pages > Reader.
  2. Enable «Allow vertical text direction».

Tip #468

Bookmark interesting posts on Vivaldi Social.

When you’ve come across a great post and want all your followers to see it too, you can boost the post. When you just want to let the author know that you liked their post, you can favorite it. Both boosted and favorited content can later be found among your posts and favorites.

But what if you don’t want to publicly interact with the post or want make an extra record of a boosted/favorited post? In that case you have the option to bookmark it. To bookmark a post on Vivaldi Social, simply click on the «Bookmark» button below the interesting post.

Tip #467

Force web pages to be displayed in dark mode in Vivaldi on iOS.

Some websites have created both light and dark versions of their site and check users’ preferences to decide which version to display. You can make your preference known in Settings > Appearance & Themes > Website Appearance.

In addition to the above, you can force dark mode on websites that come only in light color schemes. To do that, enable «Force dark theme on all websites» on the same Settings page.

Tip #466

Switch Tabs and Tab Stacks using Keyboard Shortcuts.

If you’re a fan of using Keyboard Shortcuts, we have good news for you. Did you know that you can switch between the first few Tabs or Tab Stacks you have open with simple shortcuts?

Use the shortcuts Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2, all the way to Ctrl + 8 to switch to the tab or stack corresponding to its position on the Tab Bar. Using Ctrl + 9 will take you to the last open tab or stack. (On macOS, replace the Control key with Command.)

If these shortcuts don’t work for you, you can always assign your own in Settings > Keyboard > Tab and look for «Switch to Tab #».

Tip #465

Make sure you have at least two Two-Factor Authentication methods enabled for your Vivaldi Account.

Two-Factor Authentication is a great way to ensure the safety of your Vivaldi account. See how to set it up in Tip #270. But should you, for one reason or another, not be able to use the chosen verification method, you risk permanently losing access to your account. That’s why it’s important to have a backup verification method set up as well.

Available verification methods for your Vivaldi account:

  • Authenticator app
  • Security key
  • Recovery codes

Tip #464

Close all Private Tabs in Vivaldi on Android from your phone’s Notifications.

When you open at least one private tab in Vivaldi on Android, a little icon of a ghost will appear on your mobile device’s Status Bar. The ghost lets you know that there are Private Tabs open and allows you to close them quickly even when you’re using other apps.

To close all Private Tabs:

  1. Swipe down from the Status Bar to view your Notifications.
  2. Tap on Vivaldi’s notification «Close all private tabs».

Give a rating and share your feedback on the themes you’ve downloaded from Vivaldi Themes.

There are thousands of custom themes that the Vivaldi Community has shared on themes.vivaldi.net. When you’ve downloaded a theme and you like it, head back to the theme’s page to leave a good star rating and an appreciative comment to the author. In addition to making the author happy, it also helps the best themes reach the top of the popular page.

To review a shared Vivaldi Theme:

  1. Go to themes.vivaldi.net.
  2. Log in to your Vivaldi account.
  3. Download a theme you like.
  4. Right below the theme preview, click on the stars to add your rating.
  5. Write a comment with compliments and/or feedback to the author.

Tip #462

Mark all messages in a folder as read right in the Mail Panel.

You can open the mail folder, mark each message as read individually, or mark multiple messages as read by selecting some using the Shift or Ctrl key + click, or by selecting them all with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A. But you can also mark all messages as read from the Mail Panel without even opening the folder.

To mark a folder full of messages read:

  1. Open the Mail Panel.
  2. Right-click on a folder to open the context menu.
  3. Select «Mark All as Read».

Tip #461

Drag text from a web page to the Notes Panel to create a new note.

Do you like dragging things around instead of going through context menus? There are many things you can do in Vivaldi with drag and drop, one of them is creating notes. You can drag the text from a web page you have open in Vivaldi, but also from other apps you have open on the side.

To create a new note with drag and drop:

  1. Open the Notes Panel.
  2. Highlight the text you want to create the note from.
  3. Drag it to the Notes Panel.
  4. When you see a line in your Theme‘s highlight color, drop it.

If you open one of the notes, you can also drag additional text to it.

Tip #460

Download web pages for offline viewing in Vivaldi on Android.

Heading somewhere with no internet connection, but plenty of time to read? Download the web pages you want to check out while offline to your phone or tablet with Vivaldi on Android.

To download a page:

  1. Open the page in a tab.
  2. Go to the Vivaldi menu and select «Download».

Alternatively, long-press on a link on a page and select «Download link».

You’ll find the page in your downloaded files, or better yet, before or after downloading the page, add it to the Reading List for easy access.
