Future browser updates on Android 9 (Pie) are discontinued.

Future browser updates on Android 9 (Pie) are discontinued, due to lack of support from Google. Google has confirmed that Chrome (based on Chromium 139) will stop working on Android 9 devices starting August 2025. Devices running Android 9 (Pie) will no longer receive updates or be able to install any Chromium based browsers as the Vivaldi browser. Google released their last set of security updates to Android 9 (Pie) on January, 2022 (more than three years ago). The Vivaldi browser will no longer receive updates on Android 9 after the current version — Vivaldi 7.5 (based on Chromium 138).

What versions of Android OS do we support?

We support Android 10 (Queen Cake) and above.

What can you do now?

  • Check if your machine supports a newer version of Android
  • If so, upgrade to the newest Android version your hardware can support. To upgrade your Android OS, open the Settings app, go to System > Software updates.
  • Upgrade your hardware
  • If your old Android device has been chugging along for far too long, maybe it’s time to give it a well-deserved retirement. Newer hardware means access to modern, secure operating systems, and your experience with Vivaldi will be buttery smooth. If you want to and have the means to, treat yourself.

What if you do nothing?

If you stick with what you have and keep using Vivaldi 7.5 remember, you’re entering a situation with no future updates. There is an increasing potential for new vulnerabilities. We do not recommend this from a security standpoint, but if you decide to, at least be aware of the risks!
