Snapshot 1.0.418.3 – Focusing on individual requirements, not statistics

A pile of fixes and improvements for you following the release of Beta number 3! Read on for the highlights, details and links to download the latest build of the Vivaldi browser.

It’s been five days since the Beta 3 and we have another big pile of fixes and improvements for you! Some highlights include fixes to a number of bugs that you, our regular snapshot users, have requested:

  • We have added support for Ctrl, Shift and Middle click on bookmarks bar items
  • On Mac we have added pinch to Zoom
  • On Linux we fixed the problems with middle click pasting text selections in the URL field.
  • It is now possible to assign a keyboard shortcut to switch between light and dark themes
  • We have fixed several Fast Forward and Rewind issues

Why Vivaldi is different

I want to take this opportunity to talk about Vivaldi as a company, following some recent articles I have read. For those that missed the news, Firefox has dropped its Tab Groups feature (previously called “Panorama” or “Tab Candy”). While I’m not a regular Firefox user, I distinctly remember when Tab Groups was added and the reviews that compared it with Tab Stacking (here is an example, for you history fans). Just a few years back, many saw Opera and Firefox going head to head in adding powerful features. Now both companies are stripping back their respective browsers, to cater only to the the needs of the average user.

At Vivaldi, that is not our aim at all. We are trying to build a browser that includes options and features for individuals. We do this by engaging with you here on our blog, in the forums and on social media and then, actually listening to your feedback. In that sense, I think we are close to unique in today’s browser market. A quick look at vivalditips.com (a site maintained by our Volunteer community), shows some of the range of features we have already added and we have not even hit version 1.0. To be clear, we aren’t expecting everyone to use all of these. Instead we believe that each feature caters to different ways of working and we expect individuals to use different combinations of what we have created. Everyone is after all, different.

So if you have friends using Firefox, who are disappointed by the direction it has taking, suggest they join our Community of friends and give Vivaldi a try. They may find equivalents to features they miss or new things they want to try. By joining us and giving feedback they can help influence the direction we take (this is a browser for “our friends” after all). Vivaldi does not want to model itself based on requirements defined by the “average user” but rather for your individual needs.
